Former British number one tennis player Johanna Konta to be guest speaker at Christmas Carol Concert by Candlelight at Ripon Cathedral
Former British number one tennis player Johanna Konta will be the guest speaker at one of the district’s most popular festive events.
The Christmas Carol Concert by Candlelight will be held at Ripon Cathedral on Monday, December 1, at 7.30pm.
The concert will raise essential funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, helping to provide life-changing services for people affected by cancer in Yorkshire.
Sophie Roberts, spokesperson for the Yorkshire Macmillan Carol Concert Committee, said: “This will be a magical night of music, carols, readings and a guest speaker to rouse the Christmas spirit.
“The programme features The Aysgarth School and Queen Mary’s School Choirs, professional musicians and notable readers.
“This year our guest speaker is Johanna Konta, former British number one and world number four tennis player.”
The concert is organised by a group of volunteers who meet throughout the year.
Over the past 27 years, the event has raised more than £607,000. Last year's concert was a huge success, raising more than £52,000.
This year the concert’s appeal will support the Macmillan Cancer Care Centre Appeal at York Hospital. This is a new appeal that is looking to raise £2.1million.
Macmillan are working with the NHS trust to significantly upgrade the cancer care centre at the hospital, with the NHS trust relying on a new partnership with the services of Macmillan Cancer Support.
