Inspirational ex-Harrogate student is named in Queen's Birthday Honours list as North Yorkshire community stalwarts are recognised

Lauren Doherty, who is to receive the BEM for services to education, has shown remarkable strength of character since she was in an accident crossing the road on Skipton Road in August 2008.

Despite spending 18 months in hospital, including time at a spinal unit in Sheffield, her major range of disabilities mean she is still confined to a wheelchair nearly 15 years later.

But she has never given up and has devoted her time to helping others

The former Starbeck Primary, Harrogate High and King James’s School pupil not only does not let her enduring life-changing injuries this stop her living a full life, she also visits local schools to give remarkably honest talks to pupils in her own Road Safety Talks series so that it never happens to them.

In the talks, Lauren uses her personal experience of a road traffic accident to educate children and adults about road safety and disabilities.

It's not the first time's Lauren's incredible efforts have been recognised.

In 2019, Lauren was awarded the Unsung Hero award by the Yorkshire Young Achievers Foundation.
