Harrogate's Woodland Drama Group bring chilling ghost stories to town's theatre

Harrogate-based Woodlands Drama Group will bring two of MR James’s best-loved ghost stories to the stage at Harrogate Theatre Studio later this year.

As the nights draw in, specially adapted versions of Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad and A Warning to the Curious promise an atmospheric evening of mystery, suspense and unsettling encounters.

James’ ghost stories, originally shared with friends at Christmas gatherings, have captivated generations of readers.

Their quiet settings and apparently ordinary characters conceal something altogether more disturbing.

In Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad, the discovery of an ancient, inscribed whistle among the ruins of a Knights Templar chapel sets in motion a series of terrifying events.

Set in 1919, this adaptation of A Warning to the Curious features a mostly female cast.

Miss Paxton arrives in the Suffolk seaside town of Seaburgh to convalesce after a nervous breakdown.

But her interest in local folklore draws her into a horrifying ordeal. Can fellow guests Miss Long and Mrs Woodall help her escape the consequences of her curiosity?

Retaining the distinctive language and atmosphere of James’s writing, the productions will bring his chilling tales to life through imaginative staging.

Performances run from Wednesday December 9 to Saturday December 12, daily at 7.30pm plus a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.

Tickets are already selling fast for what promises to be a spine-tingling addition to the festive theatre calendar.
