Theakston Nidderdale League: Knaresborough Forest CC's survival push continues to gather pace

Knaresborough Forest CC’s valiant late bid for Theakston Nidderdale League survival continues to gather pace.

Promoted from Division One at the end of last season, Henry Ogilvie’s team managed to win just two of their opening 17 matches and have been rooted to the foot of Premier Division table for almost the entirety of 2026.

But, three victories in their last three outings leave them just three points from safety with two rounds of fixtures remaining.

On Saturday, Forest put a huge dent in West Tanfield’s title hopes as they recorded a two-wicket success at the Calcutt Oval.

Robbie Wilberforce (49), Sam Abel (40) and Harry Abel (36) all chipped in as the high-flying visitors made 226/9 in 45 overs.

Dan Morgan took four of the wickets to fall before Alistair Bradley (96) and Henry Hopkinson (55) took centre stage, paving the way for a successful run-chase that was completed with more than seven overs to spare.

That costly defeat for Tanfield leaves them 32 points behind leaders Upper Wharfedale, who made it eight wins on the spin when they blew Helperby away.

Damon Malcolm returned superb figures of 4-14 as the home side were skittled for just 99 despite a defiant knock by captain Tom Messenger (43).

The Rams did lose a flurry of early wickets when they took their turn at the crease, however skipper Callum Lockett (32 not out) steadied the ship and guided his troops to a six-wicket triumph in the 25th over.

Second-placed Killinghall remain 11 points behind Wharfedale following their comprehensive seven-wicket victory at home to Alne.

Luke Haidar (3-17) and Scott Copley (3-22) combined to good effect to get rid of the visitors for 121.

Opener Sam Halliday then hit 76 as Killinghall eased to 125/3 in 23 overs.

Fourth-placed Goldsborough hammered another nail into rock-bottom Harrogate 3rds’ coffin.

The defending champions bowled the basement boys out for 190, Mark Wood helping himself to a fine haul of 5-42 while Freddie Proud struck 44 and Barnes Walker added 43.

James Wood (63) and Liam Walsh (31) then did the business with the bat to steer Goldsborough to 194/7.

Adam Sorrell bowled nicely for ‘Gate in a losing cause, finishing the match with figures of 4-26.

As a result of Saturday’s loss, the Roosters will now need to win both of their two remaining games to have any chance of beating the drop.

Ben Rhydding sit just three points above the bottom two after they suffered a third consecutive defeat, on the road at mid-table Birstwith.

The opening pair of Oliver Musgrave (47) and Lewis Bolton (44) batted well as the strugglers posted 216 all out.

Tom Burton (4-39) and Simon Armitage (3-41) did most of the damage for Birstwith, who then cruised to 220/4 inside 37 overs thanks to half-centuries from Joe Riley (74) and Nick Wain (53 not out).

Blubberhouses climbed above Walton Park and into sixth place following their success in Saturday’s meeting between the teams.

Blubbs were able to defend a first-innings total of 210 all out, which saw Abhishek Patil make 51 in the face of some excellent bowling by Henry Elliott (5-37).

Ali Raza (4-30) and Muhammad Qadeer (3-28) then left Park in all sorts of trouble at 35/7.

Chris Hooper (71) then did superbly to lead a spirited fightback, however the visitors were dismissed on 164 in the end.
