Warning issued as rogue traders reportedly target vulnerable residents in Harrogate

Residents across the Harrogate area are being urged to remain vigilant after reports of suspected rogue traders targeting local homes.

North Yorkshire Police has issued a warning following concerns that individuals are calling unannounced at properties, claiming urgent repair or maintenance work is needed.

The suspected rogue traders are said to focus on areas that are difficult for homeowners to inspect themselves, including roofs, chimneys, guttering and other high-level structures.

In some cases, they reportedly use scare tactics, telling residents that immediate repairs are essential to prevent serious damage.

Police have warned that elderly and vulnerable people are often the main targets of these doorstep scams.

Officers are advising residents never to feel pressured into agreeing to work immediately and to be cautious of anyone offering building or maintenance services after arriving uninvited.

Instead, homeowners are encouraged to obtain at least three quotes from reputable, established tradespeople before committing to any work.

People should also ask to see identification and independently verify any company details provided.

If repairs are suggested for a roof, chimney or another hard-to-see area of a property, seeking a second opinion from a trusted specialist is recommended.

Police are also reminding residents to avoid paying large sums of money upfront and to trust their instincts if something does not feel right.

The warning extends beyond individual households, with people encouraged to speak to elderly relatives, friends and neighbours about rogue trader scams to help protect those who may be more vulnerable to doorstep fraud.

Anyone who believes rogue traders are operating in their area is asked to report the matter to North Yorkshire Police.

If a crime is taking place or there is an immediate risk to someone's safety, residents should call 999.

Concerns can also be reported to North Yorkshire Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133, where advisers can provide guidance and refer appropriate cases for investigation.

Police are encouraging the public to share the warning to help raise awareness and protect communities across the Harrogate district.
