As Government concern over virus rates mounts, The NHS Nightingale hospitals will be asked to prepare to accept patients, either new Covid sufferers or people recovering from the virus.

Prof Powis also warned that if we don't take measures to control the virus now, the death toll that will be seen this winter will be too high to bear.

He said everyone was keen to avoid the situation where the NHS would have to cancel non-urgent surgeries, as occurred during the first wave of coronavirus.

Prof Powis also said the Nightingale hospitals could be asked to offer "elective and diagnostic services" for other patients who do not have the virus.
