Luxury retirement living is drawing younger residents to The Red House in Ripon

For many people, retirement living is something to think about later. Much later.
But for Josina and Paul Bowering - both in their 50s - the decision to move to The Red House in Ripon wasn't about getting older.
It was about getting more out of life.
As the youngest residents in the Freedom Living community, Josina, aged 55 and Paul, 59, are part of a growing number of people choosing to move earlier and shape later life on their own terms.
Their decision reflects a broader shift in attitudes towards retirement communities.
These are increasingly seen as long-term living environments that balance independence, flexibility and support.
The appeal of a “lock up and leave” lifestyle is also part of this change, offering greater freedom to travel, knowing the home is safe and secure.
At The Red House more residents are viewing village life as a proactive lifestyle choice rather than a later-life necessity.
For Josina and Paul, from Worcester Park in Southwest London. the move was driven by a desire to settle in North Yorkshire and find a home suited to the next stage of life.

Rather than delaying the decision, they opted to move once and avoid the disruption of multiple relocations.“Why move twice?” Josina says.
“Why put yourself through the stress of moving to an interim place when you already know where you want to end up?”
Their thinking was influenced by Josina’s father, who moved into another Freedom Living community.
Seeing how well he adapted, and the positive impact on his daily life, helped reshape their expectations of later living.“He’s really flourished,” she explains.

“It made us think differently about what retirement living could mean for us.”
Since moving in, the couple have quickly settled into village life, attending events, meeting neighbours and making use of shared facilities.
They also highlight the value of informal community support when adjusting to a new area.
The couple are retired. But you don't have to be to move into The Red House - just over 55. Josina describes the environment as offering “a community around you that can help you get to know the area and settle in, while still having your own front door and your own space.”

Paul adds that on-site support provides reassurance, acting “like a safety net – comforting without being intrusive.”
Their experience reflects a wider evolution in retirement living, increasingly viewed not as a final step, but as a considered lifestyle decision that supports independence, wellbeing and quality of life over the longer term.
The Red House, located within a mile of Ripon city centre, offers a selection of apartments and cottages alongside landscaped gardens and shared facilities designed to encourage active, connected living.
