Raworth will be the special guest at the festival on Thursday, October 22 at the Yorkshire Life Literary Lunch, where she will be talking about her new memoir, Running on Air – a story of broadcasting, resilience, adventure and what keeps us moving forward.

One of Britain’s most recognisable broadcasters, away from the newsroom, she discovered another kind of challenge: endurance running.

Sophie will also be the special guest at this year’s Raworths Runs which takes place in Harrogate on Friday, October 23.

This 5k run through the town is a free community event that starts from the Cenotaph at 6.30am and is open to everyone, whether you prefer to jog, walk or run.

Continuing the running theme is the popular blogger, content creator and marathon enthusiast Alison Stankard – better known online as Totes Inappropes – who brings her own irreverent take on the subject when she appears at the festival on Saturday, October 24.

Since its inception in 2012, Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival has also championed political debate, platforming an array of big names including David Cameron, Theresa May and Nicola Sturgeon, and tackled important issues that affect the lives of ordinary people.

Making Sense of British Politics with Sir John Curtice – The Crown Hotel, Harrogate, 22 October, 4.30pm.

Is Democracy in Danger with Lord Jonathan Sumption – The Crown Hotel, Harrogate, 22 October, 8pm.

Strictly Speaking with John Sergeant – The Crown Hotel, Harrogate, 23 October, 5pm.

Meanwhile, Raworths Reading Rave on Sunday, October 25 will offer the chance to turn off the digital noise of modern life.

This free event at The Crown Hotel is a chance to enjoy an hour of uninterrupted reading in companionable silence; the non-book-clubber’s answer to a shared reading experience.

Sharon Canavar, Chief Executive of Harrogate International Festivals, said: “HIF has always had a slightly rebellious streak when it comes to where and how we present great art.

“These events are playful, a little unexpected, and hopefully make people curious enough to try something they might never normally book.”
