The study by rail ticketing platform TrainPal ranked 210 train stations across the country, placing Harrogate 33rd overall with a score of 81.49 out of 100.

While major stations dominated the top of the rankings, Harrogate stood out as one of the highest-rated smaller stations, earning praise for its facilities, comfort and welcoming environment.

The research assessed stations across four key categories – station experience, performance and reputation, nearby food and drink, and nearby amenities.

Harrogate achieved an impressive 95.1 out of 100 for station experience, scoring higher than major stations including Leeds (94.7), Glasgow Queen Street (94.8) and Edinburgh Waverley (94.5).

The category took into account factors including accessibility, lifts, toilets, seating, sheltered waiting areas, Wi-Fi, refreshments, shops and mobile connectivity.

The only area where Harrogate scored less strongly was nearby amenities, receiving 62.7 out of 100.

Yorkshire performed well overall in the rankings, with Leeds securing eighth place nationally with a score of 87.41, while York was ranked 34th with 81.1.

The UK's top 10 stations were led by London Liverpool Street, followed by Glasgow Central and Glasgow Queen Street.

A spokesperson at Trainpal said: “The results suggest that the best stations aren't always the biggest or busiest.

“Sometimes it's as simple as having somewhere comfortable to sit and a decent coffee nearby.

“Other times, it's the history of the building, the buzz of the people passing through or stepping off the train and finding yourself right in the middle of a new city.

“The best stations manage to make the journey feel like it starts before you've even left the station.”
