Road disruption hits Harrogate town centre area of bistros and estate agents

The impact of long-standing roadworks in Harrogate town centre is beginning to be felt this week by motorists as work progresses.

The Victoria Avenue area of Harrogate saw months of disruption last year, thanks to pedestrian and pavement improvements as part of an Active Travel scheme launched by North Yorkshire Council with government funding.

Recent weeks has seen that disruption move to the James Street/Princes Street junctions.

While Princes Square, a centre for bistros and estate agents, remains open, North Yorkshire Council's ongoing central active travel improvements and paving restorations have been leading to temporary lane restrictions.

Having started in July, these are expected to be remain in some form until November.

In particular, Raglan Street now has three sets of roadworks as North Yorkshire Council undertakes a footway reconstruction and kerbing scheme.

The entry point for cars coming from Station Parade into Raglan Street has been closed to vehicles since July with knock-on effects for traffic on Station Parade.

North Yorkshire Council said the works were being phased to minimise disruption.

Where feasible, the first option was lane closures and parking suspensions with road closures as a last resort subject to workforce safety considerations and/or construction operations.

North Yorkshire Council previously rejected proposals for the construction of a new central cycle track on Victoria Avenue following a feasibility study.

Over the last five years, the council has secured more than £15 million in Active Travel Funds for sustainable transport projects in the Harrogate district.
