Describing themselves as a "new local group for people who are worried about the climate crisis and want to do something to bring about change," Extinction Rebellion Harrogate are planning a talk with an academic rather than following in the footsteps of activists from Extinction Rebellion in Leeds who last year installed a bright yellow boat and a protest camp on Victoria Bridge in the centre of the city temporarily.

The first meeting of Extinction Rebellion Harrogate will take place next Wednesday, January 29 at Friends Meeting House from 6.30pm featuring guest speaker Professor Judith Smith whose talk will be entitled Heading For Extinction.

Formed in 2018, Extinction Rebellion is a global environmental movement with the stated aim of using nonviolent civil disobedience to compel government action to avert climate change.

Next week's Harrogate event is open to all and organisers are posing a list of questions in advance of it:

Are you curious about what Extinction Rebellion are doing and why?
