Ripon village primary school faces closure amid falling pupil numbers and funding concerns

A village primary school in Ripon could close at the end of the Summer term in 2027 after proposals were put forward by its academy trust.

North Stainley Church of England Primary School is set to close under proposals from Leeds Diocesan Learning Trust, which said the decision followed extensive discussion and deliberation over falling pupil numbers and the school's long-term financial viability.

Parents, carers and other stakeholders were informed of the proposal on July 15 after the Secretary of State for Education gave substantive agreement for the process to move forward on July 14.

The Trust said the main reason for the proposed closure is the school's low pupil numbers, which it says mean it cannot guarantee the high-quality education and social development opportunities children deserve.

It also pointed to a county-wide decline in the number of primary-aged children, raising concerns about the school's long-term financial sustainability despite the implementation of what it described as a unique leadership model.

A four-week listening period will begin on September 2, during which parents, carers, staff, governors and other stakeholders will be able to ask questions and provide comments on the proposal.

If the proposal is approved, the school would close at the end of the Summer term in 2027.

In a statement, Leeds Diocesan Learning Trust said: "The Trust is deeply saddened that it has to make this decision.

"It will be working with parents and carers, staff and governors to manage the process and ensure that the children receive all the support and care they need."
