Harrogate chemistry teacher receives prestigious national recognition for inspiring student research
A school in Harrogate is celebrating after one of its teachers received national recognition for inspiring the next generation of scientists.
Miss Bramley, a chemistry teacher at St Aidan's Church of England High School, has been awarded Highly Commended in the IRIS Teacher of the Year Awards 2026.
The prestigious national accolade recognises teachers who go above and beyond to support students undertaking independent academic research.
Selected from more than 100 schools and colleges across the United Kingdom, Miss Bramley was one of only two teachers to receive a Highly Commended award, with just one overall winner named.

The recognition reflects her work in leading the school's IRIS programme, which gives Sixth Form chemistry students the opportunity to carry out authentic research projects while developing skills valued in higher education and future careers.
Judges praised the originality and consistently high standard of research produced by St Aidan’s students over a number of years, highlighting the opportunities created for young people to experience real-world scientific research.
In their commendation, the judging panel said: "We are pleased to recognise your dedication in supporting student research at St Aidan’s Church of England High School.
"The judges were impressed by the originality and high standard of the research over the years.
"You have created an opportunity for your students that helps them to experience real research, and their success is a testament to your hard work and commitment."
Speaking about the award, Miss Bramley said: "Our A-level Chemistry students are incredibly engaged and enthusiastic about research.
"We have been involved in the project for the last five years, and each year I am amazed by the subjects our students choose to investigate.
"Their curiosity, commitment and willingness to explore challenging questions make the programme so rewarding, and it is a privilege to support them as they develop their ideas and conduct their research."
Siân Dover, Headteacher at St Aidan’s Church of England High School, said the award was thoroughly deserved and reflected the school's wider success in science.
She said: "We are incredibly proud to recognise this achievement.
"Receiving the IRIS Award is a testament to the dedication, expertise and passion that St Aidan's brings to inspiring young people through STEM.
"Together with our incredibly strong results in science at GCSE and A level this year this recognition is thoroughly deserved."
The school said the award highlights the strength of its Sixth Form provision and its commitment to offering opportunities that extend beyond the classroom.
Miss Bramley's work has helped students develop confidence, independence and critical thinking skills through academic research, while encouraging them to explore complex scientific questions.
