The supermarket chain has submitted an application to Harrogate Borough Council following a virtual consultation with local residents.

The plans, part of a multi-million pound investment scheme, would see the redevelopment of the site of former Lookers car dealership on Knaresborough Road.

If approved, Lidl says its proposals would create around 40 new full and part-time jobs for the local economy, ‘after a year of financial hardship and uncertainty caused by the pandemic’.

The new Lidl store would have a 1,263m2 sales area, an in-store bakery, customer toilets and 94 car parking spaces including disabled, parent and child spaces and rapid electric vehicle charging points.

The business invited the public to comment on the proposals via a dedicated website or by returning a feedback form which was distributed to the local community in November.

It says over 1,000 residents responded to the consultation with 87% being supportive of the plans.

Lidl’s Property Director for the North of England, Robert Beaumont, commented: “We would like to thank everyone who took part in our virtual consultation and we are delighted with the encouraging response that we received from the community.

“Following this extremely positive feedback, we have now submitted a planning application for the site to Harrogate Borough Council.

“We have been looking forward to bringing a new store to Harrogate for a while and we hope the council agrees this is a great location for a new supermarket to serve the local community.

We are extremely excited about the prospect of opening our first Lidl in the area and serving our fresh, quality and incredibly good value produce.”
