Theakston Nidderdale League: In-form West Tanfield CC take over at the top

West Tanfield CC took over at the top of the Theakston Nidderdale League after recording a sixth consecutive victory.

The men from the Sleningford Oval began the weekend second in the Division One standings, but finished it in pole position thanks to their 48-run win over fellow title hopefuls Upper Wharfedale.

Sam Abel top-scored with 37 as Tanfield made 207/9 in 45 overs, Callum Lockett (4-31) bowling extremely well for the Rams.

But Wharfedale came up well short in reply, with none of their batsmen managing more than Joe Daggett’s knock of 30 as they limped to 159/9.

Alfie Spencer was the pick of the home attack, finishing the contest with figures of 3-33.

That result saw Tanfield edge three points ahead of long-time leaders Killinghall, who suffered a surprise 41-run loss to eighth-placed Birstwith.

The visitors posted 246 all out, Craig Robinson (112) hitting a superb century alongside Sam Ryan (35), while Scott Copley claimed 3-44.

But, despite half-centuries from Tyler Evans (57) and Copley (50), Killinghall were all out for 205.

Simon Armitage (3-21) and Riley Hirst (3-53) did the business with the ball for Birstwith.

Fourth-placed Goldsborough moved to within 12 points of Upper Wharfedale to keep their outside chances of breaking into the title race alive courtesy of a 26-run triumph over mid-table Blubberhouses.

Mansoor Waziri (45) and Liam Walsh (43) led the way for the defending champions, who put 229 all out on the board.

Muhammad Qadeer and Abhishek Patil took three scalps apiece for Blubberhouses, however their batsmen came up just short.

Aftab Yasser (54), Hamaad Hussain (40) and Aamir Rehman (31) all contributed, but their efforts proved to be in vain.

Waziri and Walsh also impressed with ball in hand for Goldsborough, bagging a trio of wickets each.

At the other end of the table, rock-bottom Knaresborough Forest recorded their first success since being promoted from Division Two at the end of last season.

After losing all of their first 11 matches, the basement boys served up a much-improved display and held their nerve to see off Walton Park.

The strugglers looked to be in big trouble once again when their hosts reached 265/9 in 45 overs, James Rawlings hitting 90 and Duncan Spencer 44 as Dan Morgan claimed 4-53.

Forest have found runs hard to come by this term, but their batsmen delivered on this occasion, completing a three-wicket victory with more than six overs to spare.

Alistair Bradley was very much the star of the show, smashing 14 fours and 11 sixes in a superb 151 not out, which came from just 90 deliveries.

Oliver Cullingworth (56) also played his part, hitting a half-century, while Marius Foster and Angus Taylor grabbed three wickets apiece for Park.

Despite that win, Forest remain 37 points adrift of safety just past the midway point of 2026.

Ben Rhydding also secured a much-needed result, beating fellow strugglers Harrogate 3rds by eight wickets to climb above them and out of the drop zone.

Lucas Hill (60) steered the Roosters to 217/9 in 45 overs, Haroon Ali scooping 3-55.

But Ben Rhydding made light work of knocking off the required runs, Arslan Nasir (77), Robbie Miller (54), Oliver Musgrave (41) and captain Forrest Hamilton (32 not out) all chipping in.

Alne now sit just 12 points above the relegation places in ninth position following their away reverse at the hands of fifth-placed Helperby.

Ryan Beaumont’s innings of 38 was the only one of any note in the visitors’ total of 122 all out, Charlie Lawrence (5-18) and Tom Messenger (3-24) doing the business for the home team.

Lawrence (37 not out) and Tom Wade (37) then guided Helperby to 124/9 inside 30 overs despite the efforts of Eddie Myers, who returned figures of 3-12.
