Harrogate has escaped the latest list of closures of TG Jones stores in the UK following the takeover of WHSmith's last year by a private equity firm.

The issue matters because Harrogate's main Post Office is located on the first floor of what is now TG Jones inside the Victoria Shopping Centre on Cambridge Street.

Local concern over the future of the store was heightened by this week's announcement which included plans to close York’s TG Jones centre shop as early as next month, in a move that will also shut the city’s main post office.

Harrogate’s only other town centre post office facility is A R News Ltd on Oxford Street.

Except for travel stores in airports and train stations, all WH Smith stores were renamed TG Jones last year after being bought by Modella Capital, a private equity firm based in London.

There are currently around 450 TG Jones stores, mostly in the UK, employing 4,700 staff.

The latest announcement about this famous brand in newspapers, magazines, books and stationery involves the closure of 19 stores across the UK during September as part of a major restructure.

But the 19 are only the tip of the iceberg after the High Court approved a major restructuring plan back in July which will involve the closure of a total of 150 TG Jones stores, with job losses running into the hundreds.
