Giant floodlights will illuminate the ruined fortress, which dates back to circa 1100, on Saturday, October 24 as part of World Polio Day.

The event is the brainchild of The Rotary Club of Knaresborough which actively participates in Rotary's global End Polio Now and Purple4Polio initiative.

The use of purple is a reminder of the purple dye used to mark the left little finger, the ‘purple pinkie’, of children given the Polio vaccine by immunisation teams in countries such as Afghanistan and Pakistan where Polio is still endemic.

Founded in 1962, The Rotary Club of Knaresborough is part of the Rotary Worldwide which has donated $2.1 billion to helping eradicate polio around the planet.

Today only two countries have endemic Polio, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Rotary's efforts over the years have seen 2.5 billion children immunised against the virus in 122 countries.

The Rotary Club of Knaresborough will also be planting 4,000 purple crocus bulbs around Knaresborough this month.
