Harrogate's domestic abuse service, IDAS, said more people have been contacting them as the social distancing measures start to take their toll in households by heightening domestic tensions.

In March, the service reported a 30 per cent increase in the use of its online chat platform when compared to the same period last year.

Sarah Hill, Chief Executive of IDAS, said in many cases this was due to cramped conditions, money worries and an increased sense of uncertainty in family homes.

She said: "Many people who face controlling, violent or abusive behaviour from a partner or family member are likely to be feeling very scared about being isolated with them for long periods of time. We want them to know that there is support available.

"Over the next few months, we will work creatively and flexibly to provide vital services in very difficult circumstances. We are immensely proud of our teams who are pulling together during this difficult time to ensure that there is a way for people to get help if they are afraid of their partner or concerned for someone they know.”

Last week, home secretary Priti Patel said victims of domestic violence "will not be forgotten" as she announced new measures which mean they can leave their homes to seek help at refuges.

North Yorkshire's Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, Julia Mulligan, welcomed the announcement and promised PCCs across the country will now be working with police forces "closer than ever" to help victims get they support they need.

She said: "We know that, whilst the necessary guidelines on social distancing and self-isolation will be trying for a lot of people, for those who are living with abusive partners they represent a real and present danger, magnified by feelings of nowhere to flee to and general helplessness.

"We want victims of this devastating crime to know that we have not forgotten them. We are working with police and partner organisations as well as the government, to make sure they are looked after and they continue to get the help and support they need.

"More than ever, a public health response is required to keep victims safe."

Ms Mulligan said she is working with IDAS to offer more innovative ways for victims to access support and advice whilst at home.

This includes an extension of its live chat service to provide a discrete way for victims to get help when they might not be able to make a private phone call.

The service is staffed by specially trained domestic abuse support workers to offer practical and emotional support. Video calls, messaging services, telephone and email support are also being made available.
