The North Yorkshire day and boarding school has been ranked 42nd out of 163 selective state schools in the country, scoring 38 out of a possible 40 points.

It is the only grammar school in the North and Yorkshire to feature in the top 50, receiving an overall rating of ‘very good’ - the highest award given by The Telegraph.

The league table assesses schools against eight measures, including academic performance, university destinations, class sizes and attendance.

Ripon Grammar School was recognised for its academic results and the breadth of opportunities available to pupils, with the assessment highlighting the school's approach to combining academic ambition with a broad education.

Ben Butcher, The Daily Telegraph's Data Editor said: “Grammar schools represent the pinnacle of state education in England.

“With 163 of them scattered across the country, these schools are fiercely competitive, academically brilliant and so influential that they actively push up house prices as parents attempt to muscle into catchment areas.”

Jonathan Webb, Headmaster at Ripon Grammar School, said he was delighted the school had been recognised among the country's leading grammar schools.

He said: “This result reflects the hard work and ambition of our pupils, the dedication of our staff and the support of our families.

“It is particularly pleasing to see our academic performance recognised alongside the breadth of opportunities we offer as a co-educational state grammar school.

“While academic achievement is hugely important, we believe a great education is about much more than examination results.

“We want every pupil to discover their strengths, embrace new opportunities and leave Ripon Grammar School well equipped for the next stage of their lives.”

The Telegraph's assessment draws on data from the 2024-25 academic year, including GCSE and A-level results, the range of subjects offered and progression to university, including the proportion of pupils going on to Russell Group and other leading universities.

According to the league table, Ripon Grammar School has an average class size of 19.6 pupils, while 62 per cent of students progress to leading universities.

Its A-level performance was also rated above both national and local averages.

The school offers both day and boarding places, attracting pupils from across the United Kingdom and overseas.

Alongside its academic provision, Ripon Grammar School offers opportunities in sport, music and drama, with an emphasis on pastoral care and helping pupils develop confidence and independence.
