Marcus Rashford backs Harrogate restaurant offering free food to children this half term

The Manchester United star has since been sharing posts from businesses across the country which have come forward to offer their support, offering food parcels and free hot meals to children throughout the school holidays.

And one of those is Harrogate's very own Portofino restaurant, based on Albert Street and run by Ozgur Babat.

The restaurant published a statement on Facebook last night, Thursday, in response to the Government vote.

It reads: "In response to the latest news regarding the Government’s negative action on Marcus Rashford’s plea for help, Portofino Ristorante Harrogate is offering free essentials to any family living in the Harrogate area requiring help during next week’s school holidays.

"Don’t be afraid or embarrassed to send us a private message. We will do what we can to help. It may simply be a case of dropping off a parcel and leaving. No one has to know and where others are concerned, it never happened."

The post has now been shared by Marcus Rashford, alongside more than 540 others, and is gaining national attention.

Mr Babat says he hopes the gesture will encourage others in the district to come forwards and do what they can to support those struggling.

He told the Harrogate Advertiser: "When I read about the decision yesterday I was heartbroken. I have a little daughter and I could end up in that same position if anything happened to my business.

"This isn't about politics, it is about humanity.

"It is a hard time for everyone right now, but we have to help each other. No children should go hungry. They are our future and should be out top priority."

The restaurant has received lots of positive feedback from the post and is gearing up to provide help from the beginning of next week.

The plan is to ensure children get one free hot meal each day during half term, as well as offer food parcels stocked with essentials to struggling families.

Mr Babat added: "We are a small, local independent, not a chain restaurant or a big, rich company. We just want to help make a difference however we can.

"Helping someone, even just one child, is priceless.

"I know the hospitality industry is struggling at the moment, but I would like to encourage everyone to help in any way they can. One small gesture can mean the world to someone else and make such a big difference. I hope other people can get involved and supprot the campaign. We must show people that humanity is bigger than politics and prove how strong our community is."

The food parcels will be delivered discreetly by Mr Babat, his wife and their two-and-a-half year old daughter next week.
