Harrogate husband and wife team link up with Johnny Vegas as glamping hits TV screens on Channel 4
A glamping business run by a Harrogate couple has worked with one of Britain's most famous comedians - and ended up being watched by millions of viewers on TV.
Glawning Limited, an e-commerce business based in Harrogate, have had the opportunity to help comedian, Johnny Vegas add the finishing touches to his vintage glamping vehicles at Field of Dreams, Breaks Fold Farm near Harrogate with their flagship canvas driveaway awnings and luxury wood burners.
The recent series ‘Carry on Glamping’ aired on Channel 4 and captured the attention and hearts of many a camping enthusiast by documenting Johnny’s rollercoaster journey to fulfilling his dream of building a glampsite with the help of his best friend, and personal assistant, Beverley Dixon.
On the outskirts of Harrogate beside stunning Thruscross Reservoir, Vegas found his perfect location and proceeded to oversee the refurbishment of five classic vehicles who have all found their home on this fascinating site.
The programme documents his captivating quest for and restoration of these vehicles, each with their own history and style. In pride of place is a Maltese bus named Patricia after Johnny’s late mother
The Glawning husband and wife team Sarah and James Martin said they were thrilled to be a part of this exciting venture and were delighted when Vegas approached them for glawnings for a 1960’s Mercedes fire truck, a Citroen camper and a Morris Minor/ Fisher holivan Caravan hybrid affectionately known as Billy the Snail.
Glawning Director Sarah Martin said, “We are huge fans of Johnny Vegas so it has been an absolute honour to be part of this and spend some time with one of our comedic heroes.
"We’re so glad to be able to provide Johnny’s guests with an extra cosy living space for their stays on Breaks Fold Farm Field of Dreams. It’s such a special place.
"This project epitomises what Glawning’s products do in creating home from home experiences of comfort and luxury in the great outdoors."
Johnny Vegas said “We don’t want to rest on our laurels and we want everyone to have the best experience they can staying here and from what I’ve learnt so far, ask anyone, behind any great glamping site is a gorgeous glawning.
"They’re our latest additions which I’m dead proud to show off, adding that extra bit of comfort, that extra bit of panache.
"If we don’t keep improving on perfection, what’s the point? It has all the modcons and comfort of home.
"A wood burning stove you can cook on. For glawning, look up comfort in the dictionary and you’ll see a picture of this.”
Sarah and James Martin first set up Glawning in 2013, inspired by the idea of promoting a comfier and more stylish alternative to typical green, nylon awning
Over the last seven years, the couple gained an enthusiastic fanbase of glawning owners.
In the process, the husand and wife's innovative small company has won a clutch of awards, most recently the 2019 Brand Yorkshire Business Award for Best Micro Business.
The Glawning team are also the creators of the popular Glampfest event, though, because of Covid, they once again had to make the difficult decision that the annual event should be postponed until May 2022 when the new dates will be 13th – 15th May.
