RSPCA York, Harrogate and District seeks £2 million to build brighter future for vulnerable animals

An animal welfare charity supporting vulnerable pets across Harrogate and the surrounding area has launched a major public appeal to help fund a transformational redevelopment of its ageing facilities.

RSPCA York, Harrogate and District is aiming to raise £2 million for the first phase of a £5 million redevelopment of its York Animal Home, which will create a modern cattery, specialist puppy facilities and a new community welfare hub.

The appeal has already secured £1.2 million towards the first phase, including a £100,000 donation from Pets at Home, leaving a further £800,000 to be raised to keep the project on track for completion by June 2027.

For almost 50 years, York Animal Home has cared for hundreds of abandoned, neglected and mistreated animals every year from across York, Harrogate and the surrounding district, providing veterinary treatment, rehabilitation and the opportunity to find loving new homes.

Although operating under the RSPCA banner, RSPCA York, Harrogate and District is an independently funded local charity, relying on donations from individuals, businesses, charitable trusts and community supporters to continue its work.

The charity says its current facilities are no longer able to meet modern animal welfare standards, with some animal accommodation already unusable, limited puppy facilities and ageing buildings becoming increasingly expensive to maintain.

Lucy Lowthian, Capital Campaign Lead for York Animal Home, said: "Every animal that arrives at York Animal Home deserves a safe place to recover, heal and begin a new chapter.

"For almost fifty years we've been providing that second chance, but our facilities are no longer fit for the future.

"This redevelopment is about far more than buildings.

"It's about ensuring vulnerable animals across York, Harrogate and the surrounding region continue to receive the care they need for generations to come.

"Many people are surprised to learn that York Animal Home is an independently funded local charity.

"While we're proud to be part of the RSPCA family, the work we do here relies on the generosity of our community and supporters.”

Future phases of the £5 million project will deliver modern dog rehabilitation facilities and kennels, improved veterinary and adoption areas, and sustainable buildings designed to reduce operating costs and safeguard the charity's long-term future.

Construction has already begun, but the charity says raising the remaining £800,000 will be essential to complete Phase One by June 2027.

Ms Lowthian added: "We've made a fantastic start, with £1.2 million already secured, but the next few months are crucial.

"With construction underway and our sights set on completing Phase One by June 2027, every donation received now will help us maintain momentum and bring these much-needed facilities closer to reality.

"This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a York Animal Home that our animals and community deserve.

"Every donation, partnership and act of support brings us closer to creating a future where more animals can be rescued, rehabilitated and rehomed.

"By coming together now, we can keep this transformational project on track and ensure these vital new facilities are ready to support animals and their owners from 2027 onwards.

"Together, we can build something extraordinary.”

Supporters can make one-off or regular donations, become fundraising partners, make legacy pledges or purchase a £50 virtual brick for the new Puppy Wall or Cattery Wall to help fund the redevelopment.
