Yorkshire comedian Lucy can twerk it out

A fast-rising comedian is bringing her debut show to Harrogate with the sort of pedigree which guarantees that, if you don’t know her name now, you soon will.

Yorkshire-born Lucy Beaumont’s surreal and offbeat humour has already won her a clutch of awards - from BBC New Comedy Award to the Chortle Award For Best Newcomer.

Having experienced sold-out runs at the Soho Theatre and the Edinburgh Festival, big things are expected of We Can Twerk it Out which is taking Lucy round the country until June.

The multi-talented Lucy said: “I’ve never performed at Harrogate before and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m from Hull and being from there informs most of my comedy.”

Performing in Harrogate Theatre’s intimate studio space on Wednesday, March 4, the new show takes audiences on a biographical journey over the past three years of Lucy’s life.

And what a three years it’s been for the newcomer described by Arthur Smith as “the next Victoria Wood in the making.”

It’s been a fast ride to success - but there is a background story. Originally mentored in 2008 by Jeremy Dyson, a member of cult comedy, The League of Gentlemen, as part of a BBC initiative supporting new talent, she went on to win the Chortle Award for Best Newcomer in 2012.

In 2013, Lucy presented her own BBC Radio 4 special.

And last year she became engaged to be married to fellow comedian and 8 out of 10 Cats team captain, Jon Richardson.

Lucy is as much an actor and writer as a comedian.

As well as touring, she is currently developing a new sitcom show with the BBC for Radio 4 after the success of her Radio 2 pilot named To Hull and Back which starred Maureen Lipman and Norman Lovett with a guest appearance by Johnny Vegas. The latter once hailed Lucy as having “the comic timing of Les Dawson, she’s an absolute natural.”
