The town's newest local radio station, HG1 Radio, will launch at 8am on Monday, July 20, the product of the same team behind York’s feelgood station, YO1 Radio, which was first launched in 2017 and was awarded a community radio licence in 2018.

HG1 Radio will join Stray FM, which is set to be rebranded as Greatest Hits Radio, Harrogate Community Radio and, of course, the longest-existing of them all, Harrogate Hospital Radio, as the fourth radio station now serving Harrogate listeners.

Listeners will be able to tune in to the new York-run station via smart speakers, HG1 Radio’s free iOS and Android app, and online at www.HG1Radio.co.uk.

HG1 Radio will broadcast 24 hours a day, with big hits from the 1960s to the present day.

Events, local information and news will help form the core of HG1 Radio's content, as well as showcasing local artists, playing a great mix of popular music, and providing specialist shows weekdays from 8pm and weekends from 6pm – including rock, northern soul, show tunes and country music.

Chris Marsden, HG1 Radio‘s programme & creative director, said: “We promise to be part of the local community and deliver a truly local radio station with great music and presenters that live and breathe the area!

"Having broadcast to the area back in 2005 for many years, it’s good to be back.”

A spokesperson said being the heart of the community was a "core HG1 value."

The spokesperson said: "The station will offer various opportunities to promote local charities and social groups.

"Local businesses can also get involved through HG1’s affordable abd creative advertising packages.

It not only broadcasts to patients on approximately 50 wi-fi radios in the hospital's wards and in most public areas of Harrogate District Hospital, donated by HHR courtesy of a grant from the Freemasons, it also broadcasts online and on its free app and is available to listen anywhere in the world.
