The Voice star for Jakes Unplugged

I’ve long been an admirer of what the Ont Sofa boys are doing in the Harrogate music scene.

So far Jason Odle and Ben Davis been responsible for a hugely popular website of the same name where they host live sessions from the cream of the local scene and rising national talent - including competitors from The Voice and X Factor.

In terms of live music, they’ve steadfastly attempted to steer clear of the meat and potatoes of the live scene locally – ie grubby pub gigs and covers bands.

First there was a series of quality shows at the stylish Lure Bar.

Now there’s acoustic shows with Jakes café-restaurant.

The common theme in a town where audiences tend to be spoilt by free gigs is you have to pay to get in but, then, you are getting something good for your money.

In the case of the Jakes acoustic shows it’s Italian food as well as high quality acts, which makes for an upmarket music experience for the lucky 50 capacity all-seated crowd.

The next Jakes Unplugged night features three great live acts in the style that Ont Sofa seems to like best – singer-songwriters meets modern pop-soul with a slightly urban edge (though they have promoted other types of acts, too, I have to add.)

Anyway, next Wednesday the line-up features The Voice star Vince Freeman who famously performed Kings of Leon’s Sex on Fire on the BBC TV reality show in the previous series (impressing The Script’s Danny O’Donogue in the process). There’s also the brilliant singer-songwriter Lewis Fieldhouse plus Feelix, an excellent Sheffield-based male/female duo who were asked to perform for the city’s Olympic torch ceremony in the build-up to the 2012 Games.
