HARROGATE Choral Society are preparing to add their own sparkle to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations with a special show at the Royal Hall on June 2.

Bringing together a wealth of local musical talent, the 180-strong choir will be joined not only by Harrogate-based, internationally renowned soprano Sarah Fox but also by an orchestra that has been brought together specially for the occasion by Henry Pankhurst, a highly respected Harrogate viola player who will also be known to many as chairman of the Harrogate Civic Society.

Drawing upon a wide pool of professional players largely from the Harrogate, Knaresborough and Ripon areas, Pankhurst has created a talented orchestra of experienced musicians who have played together in many local ensembles and at many events including Harrogate Choral Week and the Harrogate Festival Choral Course.

Marilynne Davies, deputy music director of the Harrogate Choral Society says: “We are absolutely delighted to have our own orchestra accompanying us as we not only commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of our Queen, but also celebrate Harrogate’s historic Royal links by performing in the magnificent Royal Hall, reopened in 2008 by HRH Prince of Wales, Patron of the Royal Hall Restoration Trust.”

The Diamond Jubilee Concert will include many works performed at the Coronation Service on 2 June 1953 as well as other celebratory pieces including John Rutter’s This is the Day. The latter is famous for having been composed for the marriage of Prince William and Catherine Middleton last year.

Marilynne Davies says: “We hope that the concert with its rousing repertoire will rekindle memories and also give younger generations a sense of the joyousness of the day.”
