THE final call has been made for The Big T contest, Harrogate Theatre’s biggest-ever search for local talent.

Auditions are set to take place over the next two weekends at The Cairn Hotel in Harrogate to choose who from across the district will get the chance to take the big stage for the chance to win £500.

Mervyn Darby, the chair of the audition panel, said: “The variety of acts currently registered for audition is astounding. We are in for a brilliant grand final. We are indebted to Sue Romao at The Cairn for providing the excellent facilities and for her continuing support for the theatre.”

Amongst the many hopefuls, is young rock band Subshells and Orbitals from Knaresborough who boast an intriguing name.

Band member Josh Bradley said the name was derived from chemistry. He said: “It’s something to do with electrons. I put the name to the rest of the band and it was accepted”.

The boys, aged 17 and 18, all attend King James’s School, Knaresborough and have previously played to school audiences and working mens clubs.

The big stage at Harrogate Theatre would be a whole step forward and could spell either the end or start of a new era.

The band said: “It would be an entirely new experience for us and we are due to leave school this summer.”

Also auditioning next week is Olivia Tiso, 18, also from Knaresborough.

Olivia is passionate about dance and enjoys contemporary, jazz, ballet and Riverdance, but the judges will have to wait and see which style she chooses for her audition.

Currently studying dance at college, and attending regular evening workshops, Olivia said: “I am quite confident about the audition, it will be exciting. Dance is all I have ever wanted to do.”

She recently acquired a love of the added creativity of dancing with a partner, so Shane Scarth will be accompanying her in the routine.
