Tramlines' Folk Forest expands mix of music, craft and poetry

Tramlines bosses today announced The Folk Forest, dubbed a 'festival within a festival', will be bigger than ever at  Endcliffe Park for those who like their music mixed with food, beer, art, craft and poetry.

Organisers say it will include a programme of storytelling, music and poetry by Scott Russell from Heritage Songs and Sheffield’s leading poets – all inspired by the trees and people of Sheffield.

The Folk Forest will this year stretch all the way from Hunters Bar up the Porter Valley to Shepherds Wheel.

It is part of the eighth annual Tramlines, he UK’s biggest inner-city music festival, being held Friday to Sunday, July 22 to 24.

The Folk Forest stage itself will feature a genre-spanning lineup of acclaimed acts including Field Music, Marika Hackman, C Duncan and Teleman, alongside Sheffield favourites The Big Eyes Family Players, and duo Jim Ghedi & Toby Hay, plus many more.

Organised by Regather in partnership with Tramlines, it also features a programme of food, beer, art, craft and poetry.

Representing Sheffield’s world famous real ale and craft beer scene, the newly-formed Sheffield Brewery Co-Op will be hosting a beer tent, alongside top quality independent food retailers from across Sheffield.

The free-entry, family-friendly Folk Forest Fair is also returning, with a second music stage, extensive art and craft market, forest school, new games and more.

There will be an expanded heritage crafts area offering opportunities to get hands on and work with wood, metal and leather under the guidance of crafts experts. To book a workshop visit www.thefolkforest.net

The Folk Forest team from Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity and Tramlines 2016's official charity partner, will be spending the weekend at the Folk Forest, where they will be putting on a variety of activities.

These will include an immersive virtual reality experience, a drawing competition for children, and an installation that challenges people to think about what home means to them.

Tramlines Festival Director Sarah Nulty said: "Shelter has a long-standing connection to Sheffield, which is the home of its free, national helpline, and we’re delighted to be able to support their vital work helping millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through advice, support, and legal services.

Around 100,000 music fans are expected at Tramlines to help transform Sheffield into a vibrant festival site across four outdoor stages and 15 venues.

Big names already announced include Dizzee Rascal, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Sheffield's own Radio 1 DJ Toddla T, Jurassic 5, Kelis, George Clinton Parliament Funkadelic, The Dandy Warhols, Goldie, Craig Charles and The Enemy.

Tramlines gives festival-goers a chance to see established artists alongside up-and-coming acts, across numerous outdoor stages, venues and themed trails that will take you to every corner of the city.
