The heroes of the Battle of Britain were remembered in Harrogate with a flypast by a real Spitfire at the weekend.

Part of Sunday’s hugely popular 40’s Day of nostalgia which attracted thousands of people, the Spitfire was in the D Day white stripes on the wings and body and in colours of Squadron Leader Tony Cooper who flew this actual spitfire during the Second World War.

It was flown on Sunday, in an event organised by Friends of Valley Gardens, by Wing Commander Justin Helliwell of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

The original heroic pilot, Tony is still with us and has recently been reunited with “his” Spitfire whose registration number AB 910.
