The concert opened with Baba Yetu, a Swahili version of the Lord’s Prayer, involving lovely harmonies, which were a feature of the whole evening. Java Jive changed the tempo completely and the choir appeared to switch effortlessly into Chilcott’s Advent Candle and a well-loved favourite O Holy Night.

Special mention must be given to fabulous solo performances by Christian Lunn and Niamh Robinson-Wakefield. Niamh’s delivery of Mozart’s Laudate Dominum was sung with sweetness and clarity and Christian’s performance of Bring Him Home from Les Miserables kept the audience spellbound bringing a few tears to the eye.

June Garbutt, the choir’s musical director, and Niamh performed The Evening Prayer from the opera Hansel and Gretel. Niamh also performed with Christian in an interesting arrangement of You Raise Me Up and Danny Boy.

Nigel Beetles excelled on piano and was supported by two students from King James’s School on keyboard and drums.

Enthusiastic audience participation greatly enhanced the enjoyment for all and the card raising skills of selected audience ‘volunteers’ throughout the 12 Days of Christmas was an added source of amusement. Following a performance of Santa Baby and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, the choir closed the concert with a mix of traditional carols assisted by the audience.
