Fiona Odle set up the Briggate Art Studios, behind the George and Dragon pub, in February 2020, shortly before the first lockdown of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It turned out to be the best year ever,” said Fiona who is an impressionist artist and paints semi abstract landscapes.

“It was uncertain at first, but the Government grants have helped sustain the studio.”

The upturn continued as Fiona went on to form a partnership with fellow Henshaws worker and professional artist Shirley Hudson, who then took the studio next door.

“At the time I was running art classes but as soon as lockdown happened in March I had to think differently,” added Fiona who graduated BA (Hons) in Art & Design at Leeds Metropolitan University in 2000.

“I had always wanted a studio to produce my own work so I have painted non stop all year.

“During that time my work has changed dramatically from figurative to semi abstract.

“I paint a lot of local landscapes both for galleries and commissions.

“Shirley also paints landscapes and flowers around Nidd where she lives.”

As the new Art Director of Feva Festival, Fiona has recently set up the Knaresborough Art Hub to connect artists and other creatives in the area to collectively promote their work.

Fiona and Shirley recently staged an exhibition which they described as a ‘big splash of colour’.

“I love painting in bright colours and the walls are adorned with colour,” added Fiona.

“The building is full of wall space so we can house many paintings, prints and greeting cards.

“We will have other renowned local artists exhibiting in the studios throughout FEVA and the Nidd Art Trail in August.

“The future looks bright for Briggate Art. I can envisage a busy, colourful place with workshops and exhibitions throughout next year.”

Fiona is planning a solo exhibition in July. Information at: www.briggateart.co.uk
