Amazing offer by world famous brass band to Harrogate music charity for Valley Gardens event

Harrogate's most famous living writer to sign new book at Imagined Things store

Throughout lockdown, Tewit Youth Band's various bands have been inactive until about a month ago when they were allowed to begin rehearsing again with limited numbers.

Full of enthusiasm they were all delighted to return and already preparing for a number of concerts with the highlight being a special joint show next month involving Tewit's senior band and one of the world's most famous bands.

Tewit Senior Band, themselves one of the top youth brass bands in the country having won three gold awards and around six silver awards in the National Youth Brass Band Championships over the years, have received an amazing invitation.

To kick start live concerts after 18 months in lockdown, the famous Black Dyke Band, one of the best brass bands in the world, have offered to play a joint outside concert free of charge with Tewit Senior Band, in an event funded by the Government's Culture Recovery Fund via Arts Council England.

The concert will take place in the bandstand at Valley Gardens, Harrogate on Sunday, July 4 and will be free to everyone.

Black Dyke Band will be conducted by their Musical Director Professor Nicholas Childs.

Whatever Covid restrictions apply at the time will be implemented.

The concert will commence at 3pm with each band playing a half.

The band's president Colin W Gibbs BEM said: "Tewit Youth Band (Harrogate) is a charity organisation that encourages young people from throughout the area, even from as far as Doncaster and Leeds, to participate in learning brass and percussion instruments from age 6 up to 18.

"I’ve been involved with them for 40 years this year and been President for 30 years. They are well supported by a wonderful committee of dedicated parents who volunteer to provide all the background jobs.

"There are around 100 members in total and they are split into four groups: Training, Junior, Intermediate and Senior Bands.

"They meet every Wednesday evening in an old Methodist Chapel in Huby, near Harrogate, which was generously provided for them by a local benefactor.

"Ex Tewit members currently play in many of the top Brass Bands throughout the country, one plays in a Guards Band and another in the Band of the Royal Marines, so a very high standard is achieved."
