The Under the Hammer column with Morphets of Harrogate: Delightful results at D for Design sale

2021 got off to a flying start for Morphets, the Harrogate auctioneers, with a great response to the first sale of the year, The D for Design sale held last month.

D for Design is a curated sale held two or three times a year and includes interior design pieces for home and garden.

The lots are chosen from general auction consignments and selected on merit be it retro, contemporary, Deco, traditional or antique, not to forget the downright quirky.

This creates an amazing mix of furniture, art and ornament for those wanting to create a more individual look.

The auction was held behind closed doors with viewing and live bidding on the internet.

Top price went to a vintage Ib Arberg (Sweden) hanging parrot chair, illustrated here, which sold for £2,600, followed by a rosewood and teak dining suite by Robert Heritage for Archie Shine, consigned from a Manchester home, which realised £2,200.

Two Verner Panton (Denmark 1926-1998) purple moulded plastic wall panels, probably by J Luber AG, Switzerland took a final bid of £1,200.

A zany occasional table by Wondermold Ind Inc. USA in the form of a sunflower in a pot, 41cm diameter x 41cm high, sold for £200.

Amongst the soft furnishings a pair of Howard-style armchairs, with the distinctive long deep seat, sold for £600 and a pair of contemporary champagne velour two seater sofas in mint condition sold extremely well at £2,000.

A French armoire by Grange, painted green, sold for £650. A rosewood shelf system from the 1970s, removed from a local office was chased up to £650 despite being faded in parts.

Amongst the lighting a Porta Romana bronzed metal figural table lamp sold well at £450 and for the garden a pair of tree stump effect stools, moulded in concrete, sold to an American bidder at £650.

A pre-war tin bath sold for £48 and a pre-war set of green painted wooden step ladders, 109cm high, went to a delighted bidder at £120. All prices are plus buyer’s premium of 15% plus VAT

The next D for Design sale will be held on July 17 at Morphet’s saleroom, 6 Albert Street, Harrogate.
