Dormy House Hotel and Spa: the perfect retreat for a winter weekend wrapped in romance

There are some places that don’t just host your weekend - they welcome you with open arms, pour you a glass of something delicious by a crackling fire and coax you to sip and exhale

Dormy House in the Cotswolds is one of those rare sanctuaries; the kind that stirs expectation the moment it comes into view, exceeds it on entry and entirely surpasses it during your stay.

Perched proudly above Broadway on the rolling Farncombe Estate - this majestic 17th-century converted honey-stoned farmhouse is a rural revelation for lovers of fine food, lazy lie-ins, sense-soothing spa days and mastering the art of pure relaxation.

Arriving on a crisp Saturday morning, with city shoulders and busy minds, my husband and I were running on emergency batteries, craving a gentle reminder of how it feels to just be together - unhurried, stress-free and content in each other’s company.

Within minutes, it was clear we’d come to the right place.

A storybook escape where fine food meets fireside comfort, wine is paired to perfection and every corner hides a cosy nook more magnificent than the last, Dormy House is exquisitely inviting, beautifully styled and run by polite, intuitive people who seem to know just what you need before you even ask.

Award-winning house spa

With time to spare before check-in, we received an uplifting welcome - gracious and unhurried - as our bags disappeared in a blink, preceding an invite to ‘start with the spa’.

Heeding the nudge, robes at the ready, we padded down dimly lit, deliciously scented corridors and - within minutes - were floating in turquoise infinity, marvelling at the mist of the outdoor jacuzzi curling into the crisp afternoon air.

Beyond that first blissful hour, timelessness set in.

As Dormy House quietly began to work its magic, we drifted from the warmth of the sauna to the exhilarating chill of the snow room before settling in soothing bubbles, beneath open skies, to savour clear minds and absolute calm.

Skin glowing, shoulders light and the world feeling beautifully far away, we climbed the spiral staircase to the outdoor bar terrace, a sun-drenched spot perfect for al fresco lunches, expertly crafted cocktails and watching the countryside roll by.

Ordering a traditional Ploughman’s platter, piled high with local cheeses, cured meats, pickles and crusty bread, we ate in tranquil awe, savouring the scent of eucalyptus, the sound of clinking glasses and the soft, conversational hum of effortless afternoon.

Lost in relaxation, at near nightfall, it dawned on us we had a room to go to. Or, rather, a premium ‘Top Notch’ haven, the proud pinnacle of Dormy House’s distinguished bedroom offerings.

Blending calming creams, contemporary elegance and lofty-beamed charm, our home for a two-night stay was serene and beautifully bespoke; every detail, from the sumptuous bedding and carefully curated furnishings to the subtle mood lighting and complementary welcome cocktail, combining seamlessly to create immersive, unpretentious indulgence.

Connoisseurs of characterful, uniquely styled accommodation, the Dormy House choice is exquisite - from intimate country-cottage-feel nooks and spacious Comfy retreats, to Splendid spaces designed for families and Top-Notch retreats the ultimate in understated luxury.

Nested high up in the eaves with sweeping panoramic views, the elegant Attic Suite oozes romance and a distinctly penthouse pizzazz, while the chic Courtyard Hot Tub Suites invite moonlit magic and champagne-sipping beneath the stars.

Whichever you choose the details delight: luxury linens, Temple Spa toiletries, well-stocked mini bar and five-star service completing a classy confetti of unforgettable finishing touches.

A place for wining and dining

Aperitif in hand, relaxed and replenished, we watched the wispy golds of twilight melt over the hills before moving inside to The Back Garden for an evening of fabulous food, fine wine and flawless hosting.

As darkness fell beyond the chic floor-to-ceiling windows, we lingered over the mouth-watering menu by candlelight, calling on my good friend and Saturday Kitchen’s resident wine expert, Olly Smith, to peruse the extensive wine list and suggest the perfect pairing for our meal.

A Connoisseur’s Choice

Pinging over our selections along with the wine options, Olly duly responded, resulting in a decadent dining experience of explosive flavour, inspired pairings and pure, unhurried pleasure.

He said: “For the RibEye, I’d go for Psi (Bodegas Alnardo), £95 from a guy called Peter Sisseck, one of the best winemakers on the planet. He makes Spain’s most expensive wine (called Pingus) and Psi is a real glimpse of greatness.

“Crepe Soufflé? Mmm, I’d be tempted by the Royal Tokaji 5 Puttonyos for £140, mad splash out but tastes like apricot jam with lasers …and if you want fizz to start, Gusbourne Blanc de Blancs is electric!

“For a white wine, the Tardieu Laurent Condrieu from the Rhone will be super peachy!”

As lanterns winked to life on the lawns, Olly’s advice heeded and enjoyed, our evening unfolded in layers of culinary indulgence, each one more enchanting than the last, culminating in after-dinner coffees and a cosy fireside nightcap.

From first sip to final bite, the whole experience was a seamless collage of everything Dormy House does best: exquisite food, carefully chosen wines, attentive service and that signature Cotswolds warmth that lingers long after the last sip.

Moments to remember

It’s the quiet moments that echo the longest - flaky pastries and fresh juices shared over an award-winning Cotswold breakfast, fields still veiled in morning mist beyond the windows. The hand-in-hand rambles along winding country trails before returning to the cocooning bliss of the spa or sinking into plush fireside sofas and watching the flames crackle and dance.

Dormy House doesn’t try to dazzle; it simply envelopes you in easy elegance, effortlessly impresses and lets you breathe and just be.

Fond Reflections

On the drive home, we agreed: Dormy House isn’t simply an escape - it’s an accomplished masterclass in slowing down. Where lazy mornings melt into soothing afternoons, evenings enchant and every hour unfolds with organic ease.

Departure didn’t bring that familiar post-holiday ache, but rather a quiet contentment - the kind that fuels daydreams of return long after the suitcases are unpacked.

Because Dormy House doesn’t just offer a weekend away; it gives you back a little piece of yourself.
