Pumps were brought in to clear the surface water, which had been caused by flooded drains, and sandbags put in place outside of properties.

Flood water engulfed football grounds in Tadcaster and workers at the neighbouring brewery were forced to make their way around the site on wooden pallets.

The pitch and part of the supporters’ stand at Tadcaster Albion’s grounds were completely submerged with flooding from the nearby Wharfe.

This week Tadcaster Albion spokesman John Clothier posted that it had been hoped to start improvements to help prevent flooding in March this year.

“There are several options under consideration to mitigate the damage that any future flooding of the town might cause.

“One of the possible solutions in particular seems to provide the necessary measures to safeguard our ground and we are working with the Environmental Agency to pursue this alternative to avoid the catastrophic problems we have suffered in recent times - indeed the “Global Stadium” is again under water at this moment.”
