Yorkshire great set to feature in crown green bowling bonanza

Yorkshire’s biggest name in the world of crown green bowls is coming to Harrogate on Friday.

Graeme Wilson is playing an exhibition match at Wayside Bowling Club from 6pm.

Yorkshire’s most successful crown green bowler will be accompanied by county legend Robert Hitchen, one of the counties most decorated players.

The line up also includes the manager of Yorkshire’s Crossfield Cup winners Keith Hatzer and Choe Hirst.

Hatzer is a top national coach, and Hirst is an up-and-coming ladies star who doubles up in the Yorkshire Juniors and Yorkshire Ladies.

The quartet will be lining up against the districts younger and up and coming stars including James Bushby, Tony Derrick, Mark Herrington Adam Varley, and Stephen and Brad Walker to name a few.

The games will be followed by a forum and chance for some top tips from the stars.

As we approach the end of the season it’s still everything to play for in Division 1 as rivals Black Swan and Wayside fight for the title.

Black Swan hold a seven-point advantage at the top of the table however Wayside still have a game in hand. It’s without doubt going to go down to the wire and be a very close finish indeed.

Black Swan enjoyed a good 8-2 victory over Knaresborough Lions with Dave Smith 21-6 and Richard Hughes 21-9 leading the way.

Wayside kept the pressure on with a full house against Pateley Bridge with Andy Gilroy 21-8 and Robert Maude 21-9 helping them to a clean sweep 10-0 victory.

Third placed Starbeck also had a great win with David Spilsbury 21-4 and Danny Towning 21-4 taking them on to a 10-0 win.

Bilton Centurions took the local derby match against Bilton WMC 7-3 with Carol Sunter 21-4 Sara Elsworth 21-7 and Alan Blackburn 21-7 bowling well against their local rivals.

Knaresborough Tigers torrid season continues as Black Swan 2nd beat them 7-3 making it 18 loses from 18 games.

Chris Alison was the best of the evening winning 21-9. It was also the game that condemned the Tigers to relegation.

Fellow strugglers Boston Spa continue to feel the pain as they suffered their fourth 10-0 defeat of the season.

With Bardsey firmly in control throughout the game it was Philip Schofield 21-2, Geoff Moorhouse 21-6, and Andrew Dodsworth 21-8 who all put in great performances. It’s looking bleak for Boston who with the escape from relegation looking like mission impossible.

North Yorkshire are back in action this Sunday in the National Federation League. The home tie will be played at Low Harrogate Bowling Club with a start time of 2pm.

The game is against local rivals Leeds. With the winner also taking the league title and securing promotion this is sure to be an exciting game with everything to play for.
