Wembley dream for Willow Tree

PUPILS from Willow Tree Primary School had a once in a lifetime experience recently playing in front of 40,000 fans prior to the play-off final at Wembley.

The youngsters from Harrogate played out of their skins to lift the The npower Football League U-11 Kids Cup Final beating Welsh school YGG Pontybrenin 1-0 thanks to a goal by Bryn Sumner.

Willow Tree reached the final by finishing top of the tree in a competition that saw over 2,500 schools take part over three separate qualifying stages.

Representing Leeds United the school first qualified for the grand final in the North regional final of the Championship competition held at Oakwell Stadium in Barnsley.

Victory there then meant the side had the dream opportunity to travel down to the home of England football.

Before their big match at Wembley the squad had a full tour of Wembley and were treated just like professionals for the day.

Two players out of the team were spotted, Bryn Sumner and Harry Kirk were selected to play for the Leeds United shadow squad.

Both players currently play for Harrogate Railway.

Bryn capped his performance with the winning goal on the day.

“To score at Wembley was truly amazing, every 11-year-old footballers dream,” he said.

Tori Greenwood was the only female player on the day and Chaz England played a blinder in goal.

Bryn’s dad Paul Sumner added: “It was an amazing day and I’m so pleased for Willow Tree Primary School-what an achievement.

“A big thank you to LUFC, Michael Kinsey and Ben and Npower for the experience - the hard work paid off.

“I would also like to a special thank you to Ray Green - Harrogate Railway coach for all hard work and support he gives the boys. As Bryn’s dad I’m really proud of him - at £30 a goal I’m pleased it didn’t get to four.”

It’s been a whirlwind few weeks for the youngsters.

Ahead of the final current Wales manager and Leeds United legend Gary Speed coached the team from Woodlands and passed on his words of wisdom prior to the finals.

The squad included on the day consisted of: Chaz England (GK); Bryn Sumner; Jack Lazenby (c); Jordan Briggs; Tori Greenwood; Harry Kirk; Albert Ibrahimi and Craig Leitch.
