VIDEO: ‘Sky the limit’ for Harrogate star Callum Irvine

Director of rugby Mike Aspinall says the “sky is the limit” on the potential of star fly-half Callum Irvine.

Irvine pulled the strings in Harrogate’s supreme 59-14 victory over Stockport on Saturday to lift the Cockerels up to fifth in National Two North.

The fly-half is Gate’s leading points scorer this season with 38 and he has kept Joe Rowntree out of the number ten shirt with a string of quality performances.

Aspinall said: “I have been really impressed with his form this year. Joe is back and playing well and I’m not putting him in the ten shirt because Callum is really developing.

“I have always said about Callum, he can be as good as he wants to be. His ability is second to none.

“It just depends on what Callum wants. At the moment he wants to be in a Harrogate shirt and part of the family. Where could he finish? The sky’s the limit.”

This weekend, table toppers Ampthull and District will present a tougher examination for Gate, who will hope to extend their unbeaten run to seven matches.

But despite their form, Aspinall said Gate won’t get carried away.

He said: “The goal the players set was to be in the top six at Christmas. It’s great to be on course for that and we have only lost once.

“There’s a humility about this side to get better week to week but we won’t be looking at the league table too much at the moment.”
