Joseph powers to first senior title at Sunderland Aquatic Centre

Harrogate District Swimming Club members produced some excellent results in the last weekend in November, at the annual North East Regional Short Course Swimming Championships,held in the Sunderland Aquatic Centre.

The meet, held over two days, saw the 50m pool divided by a portable boom into two 10-lane, 25m courses with a hectic schedule of events for swimmers aged 11 to adult with a large team from the Hydro-based club in attendance.

Sixteen-year-old Joseph Porter powered to his first senior title, winning the men’s 200m butterfly event.

He stormed home from behind in trademark style to win a thrilling race and in the process, sliced four seconds off his previous best time.

Team-mate Charles Lonsbrough, 18, chased Porter home to finish in the bronze medal position.

Yorkshire champion Brandon Chan, 16, recorded a fine silver medal in the men’s 50m butterfly sprint.

In the junior age group competition Ruth Marley, 13, won a bronze medal in the 800m freestyle, knocking an amazing 32 seconds off her previous best time.

Not to be outdone, John Wright, aged 14, also recorded a personal best time in winning a bronze medal in the 1500m freestyle.

As always, coach Ian Spencer’s squad of male swimmers figured prominently in the relay events with the 4 x 100m freestyle team of Nathan Hale, Matthew Rudolph, Charlie Lonsbrough and Brandon Chan winning gold in fine style.

The 4 x 200m team consisting of Hale, Chan, Lonsbrough and Oliver Bell claimed a silver medal.

The quartet of Rudolph, James Thompson, Chan and Lonsbrough were second in the 4 x 100m medley relay with the Harrogate B team of Bell, Matthew Law, Porter and Hale in bronze medal position.

Other Harrogate individual finalists in the senior events were Nathan Hale, Serra Hale, James Thompson, Matthew Rudolph, Lauryn Dean and Matthew Law.

Twelve-year-old Lucy Woodcock, Isabelle Lepine 11, Daniel Patko 10 and Ella Hampson 11, all achieved creditable top ten finishes in the age group competitions.
