Harrogate squash duo Chris Simpson and Jenny Duncalf lost in the first round of the Allam British Open on Monday, but James Willstrop lives to fight another day.
Willstrop came from behind to beat German Simon Rosner 5-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-9. The fifth seed from Harrogate will face Omar Mosaad in the second round on Thursday night.
However Simpson went down in straight sets (11-4, 11-3, 11-2) to Gregory Gaultier, admitting: “I got taught a bit of a lesson last night. I felt a touch off my game, and against Greg that means you don’t get any second chances.
“His power and speed left me feeling very rushed on court, which affected my decision making and my accuracy.”
Jenny Duncalf suffered a surprising defeat (11-6, 2-11, 6-11, 13-11, 11-8) to Sarah Kippax on the opening day of the tournament. The 10th seed was two sets to one up but lost out in a match that lasted almost an hour.
