Yorkshire pride will be up for grabs at Grange Park on Sunday as Wetherby RUFC’s Under 17s squad bid to emulate the club’s all-conquering first team.

After coming top of league three in Yorkshire Junior Colts league, Wetherby U17s have gained entry into the National Bowl.

Wetherby had a hard-fought wins away at Penrith 22-19 in the quarter-finals before closing out a tense semi-final at home against West Hartlepool 17-15.

The team now find themselves in the Northern Division Final this Sunday (March 29) where they face Yorkshire rivals Driffield.

The match will be held at Grange Park, the home of Wetherby RUFC, and kick off is at 11am.

Club spokesman Phil Stearn said: “This squad has been together for several years now as they have up through the age groups and they have developed into an extremely capable team.

“Their rigorous preseason fitness work and regular indoor and outdoor training sessions through out the season are benefitting them now as the cup competitions reach their climax.

“The coaches have worked hard to develop a strong team ethic within the 22 man squad which meant that throughout the league fixtures the full complement of players were used and this is continuing into the cup competitions.”

After the disappointment of a narrow loss to Wath 5-0 in the Yorkshire Cup last weekend, the lads are fully focussed on the National Bowl Final.

Fixtures against Driffield this season have been very tense affairs with the last resulting in a narrow 17- 15 win for Wetherby.

Stearn added: “For most of them this will be the biggest game this squad has ever played in - two more wins would see them in the National Final.

“It goes without saying that the lads will be fired up and will work for each other to ensure they get the right result.”
