All-conquering Wetherby Rugby Club secured back-to-back promotions after a tense victory over direct title rivals Thornensians.
The Reds held their nerve to win 28-23 at Grange Park and all-but secure the Yorkshire Division Three championship.
Conor Sheridan scored the match-winning try under the posts after pouncing on veteran scrum half Nick Oates’ incisive pass.
The victory took Wetherby up to 109 points, with South Yorkshire rivals Thornensians 18 behind.
Thorne could still catch Wetherby with two extra league matches, and five in total, to play, however the league leaders still have to play two sides languishing at the bottom of the table in their remaining three matches.
Wetherby were promoted into the third tier of Yorkshire rugby after winning all their matches in Yorkshire Division Four last season.
A 10-10 draw at third-placed Goole has been the only minor blip in Wetherby’s season to date.
The Grange Park outfit were last beaten more than two years ago and are on course to win national honours this season after progressing to the semi-final of the National Junior Vase.
