Racing tips: Garlick’s Goodies for racing at Newbury and Newcastle

Cue Card, tipped in these pages last week, was an impressive winner of the Betfair Chase last week and looks right back to the form he showed in 2013.

The big race this Saturday is the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury which was won last year by subsequent Grand National winner Many Clouds.

Former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Bobs Worth could be thrown in off a low weight but I fancy the Alan King trained Smad Place.

My selection was fifth in the race last year but has had a winning prep race this year so should strip fitter.

Bobs Worth won a hurdle race at Aintree in good style and I also like the lightly weighted If In Doubt.

The long distance hurdle on the same card could feature Cole Harden who won the Stayer’s Hurdle at Cheltenham.

He flopped in the soft at this Newbury meeting last year so I will take him on with the Nicky Henderson-trained Whisper.

This horse has winning form on heavy ground and beat Cole Harden at Aintree in April.

The Fighting Fifth hurdle at Newcastle could feature Irving who did this column a favour when winning last week.

If he runs he would be my selection but his trainer may not turn him out again so quickly.

In his absence I would go for the Irish raider Wicklow Brave. He was third behind stable mates Nichols Canyon and Faugheen last time and that is top notch form.

Wakanda won at Wetherby’s Charlie Hall meeting for local trainer Sue Smith and will be carrying my money in the Rehearsal Chase. He looks a promising young stayer who acts on soft going.
