Karate squad bring back medal haul from North West Open tournament

Harrogate Shotokan Karate Club and Boston Spa Karate Club returned from the 44th North West Open Karate Championships with a huge haul of medals and trophies.

The squad had an extremely successful day and topped the medals table.

The highlight of the day was the Men’s Team Kumite event.

The Harrogate/Boston team took all three rostrum places with the B team (Callam Payne, James Brown and Joe Bulmer) beating the A team in an exciting final.

The final of the Senior Men’s Kumite saw teammates Sam Goulden and Joe Hart battling it out for the Gold, Sam came out on top leaving Joe with the silver. Tom Mitchell took the gold in the Boys Kumite Over 5’5” with a fine display of fast footwork and punching.

Emelye O’Brien continued her winning ways by taking the Gold in the Girls Kumite 12-15 years.

Bulmer added to his team Gold with an individual bronze in the Junior MaleKumite. Katelyn Entwistle took the bronze in the Childrens Kata.

Club Instructor Matt Price, former World Karate Champion, said: “Everybody performed fantastically. It was especially pleasing to have topped the medal table in this, the longest running karate tournament in the UK.”
