Harrogate Shotokan and Boston Spa Karate Club have had tremendous news this week, with five members selected to represent England at the upcoming World Shotokan Karate Championships.

The championships, held between September 17-18 in Chicago, will see the world’s finest karate competitors in action.

Ashley Scott has again been selected in the Senior Ladies Kumite. Ashley, 25, will be looking to go one stage further then she did two years ago at the last World Championships in Mexico where she claimed silver.

Ashley, who is sponsored by Thomas Heald Chartered Financial Planners, has proved herself to be a dominant competitor both at home and internationally.

Ryan Tucker, a Junior World individual silver medallist, has been selected in the senior men’s Kumite. Ryan, 22, has shown excellent form since moving up to the senior events.

Mell Finlay, earning her fourth international cap, has been selected in the junior ladies Kumite.

The 20-year-old is looking to build on the bronze medal she took at the European Championships last November in Germany.

Jordon Probst, earning his second international cap, has been selected in the Cadet Men’s Kumite and Kata.

The 17-year-old Harrogate Grammar School has had an outstanding year competing, taking gold at both the National and Youth National Championships.

Stephen Brown, also earning his second international cap, has been selected in the junior men’s Kumite.

Stephen, 18, has shown consistent improvement in the last two years and won gold at the UK Grand Slam earlier this year.

All five, who train up to six times a week at the clubs based at Harrogate High School and Boston Spa School, were absolutely delighted with the news.

“To have five competitors selected for the 15 strong England team is an amazing achievement,” said instructor Matt Price.

“I’m sure they can bring some medals home.”
