Ripon racecourse kicks off its summer flat season today after a winter of refurbishment at the course.

The meeting had originally been billed as a seven race card but there will now be eight races after the third race was split into two divisions.

The first race, a two-year-old maiden, goes under starters orders at 2.10pm with the last race at 6.05pm.

The Ripon ‘Cock O’ The North’ Handicap is the feature race and will see three-year-olds running over one mile.

The meeting also launches RiponBET which Ripon Racecourse clerk James Hutchinson hopes will prove an improvement on the totepool operations used at the course in previous years.

The racecourse has added terraced areas to the Jim Joel Bar and the Theakstons Terrace Bar.

Hutchinson said: “The refurbishments are going to be finished in time. It’s all been a bit last minute but we’re all set and ready.

“At the beginning of the season it’s always exciting. We are looking for good weather this year and good attendances.”

Thirsk Racecourse’s 2013 season also gets underway on Saturday with seven races from 2.10pm.
