The student side began Saturday’s North Division One encounter at a fast pace, which suited ‘Gate in the opening minutes as it allowed them space to play in.

And it was the away side who broke the deadlock when Alfie Weaver found Chaz Edmondson inside the D, the latter making no mistake with a ferocious hit past the home goalkeeper.

Both sides traded possession cheaply, but the University team began to build more pressure and looked the more likely to score and an equalising goal duly arrived before the end of the first period.

A Newcastle attacker was met by visiting custodian Rob Stanworth, who made the initial save, however with both players on the ground it was the forward who reacted first, managing to squeeze the ball home to for 1-1.

Just before half-time, the Granby side lost two players to injury and this was to prove a real hindrance after the break.

While Will Rogers’ young side battled valiantly throughout the second period, they could not find the final touch required to put them back in front.

As ‘Gate pushed forwards in search of the win they left space in behind for the students to attack.

And with just two minutes left on the clock the home side passed the ball around ‘Gate keeper Stanworth to ensure that all three points stayed at the Stan Calvert Memorial Ground.

Harrogate 2s welcomed Kingston upon Hull 1s to Granby on Saturday, evenually going down 1-0 in what was a close encounter.

With the two sides evenly matched, it was Hull who broke the deadlock 20 minutes into the first half.

Harrogate fought hard for the rest of the game, but couldn’t muster any clear opportunities to equalise due to an excellent defensive performance from the travelling side.
