Ripon Tennis Centre hosted the annual Ripon City Open Tennis Tournament, in a week that saw great weather and a wealth of local talent emerging.

The tournament attracted a large entry with 134 juniors competing, from as far afield as London, Gloucester and Scotland.

Alec Graham, who has just finished at Ripon Grammar School, won all his matches in the U-18s boys, beating Liam McArthur of Stockton on Tees in the final.

Following the tremendous news that he had gained four A*s in his A Levels and gained a place at Oxford University this was quite a summer for Alec.

Another Ripon Grammar pupil also shone through. Thirteen-year-old Amy Gatford lost a close final in the U-14s girls, losing to Nicola Tweedy of Sunderland 6-2, 3-6, 16-14 in a match just short of two hours.

She also reached the final in the U-16s girls event, losing in the final to Yasmin Tanfield from Cleveland.

Eleven-year-old Victoria Lapthorne, who is starting school at Bedale High not only reached the quarter finals of the U-12s girls event but went one better in the U-14s .

There she lost in the semi finals to her friend Amy Gatford.

Head Coach of Ripon, David Drake, was pleased with the local performances.

“We have a wealth of talent at the club and it is good to see those players getting match experience against players from further afield,” he said.

“We work closely with the LTA to ensure our Performance players progress within the Club and the County tennis programmes”.

The club caters for all ages and is very popular amongst adult players also.

“We have adult beginner groups and these players then move into improver groups and tennis mornings which take place every day of the week,” added Drake.

“These groups are very social as well as improving your tennis at the same time.”

The Centre has recently added an additional artificial grass court with floodlights, along with raised seating to all of the courts; all of these improvements helped to make this year’s tournament the best yet.
