Why Aaron Martin will score goals for Harrogate Town regardless of which league they're playing in

It remains to be seen when Harrogate Town’s newest recruit will actually be able to play for the club.

Striker Aaron Martin joined from Guiseley just days before the 2019/20 National League season was suspended due to the coronavrius outbreak, and is yet to kick a ball in anger for his new side.

Indeed, with uncertainty surrounding how the current campaign will be concluded, nobody can say with any real authority which division Town will find themselves in when football does eventually resume.

If it proves impossible to play out the remainder of the regular season and then the play-offs, then there remains the possibility that Simon Weaver’s men could be promoted to League Two by virtue of the fact that they currently sit second in the National League standings and boast the best points-per-game ratio of any side beneath leaders Barrow.

There is, of course, still plenty to be decided, however, one thing that Weaver is certain of is that, regardless of the level his team are operating at, 28-year-old Martin will score goals.

“I think Aaron will do really well for us,” the Town boss said.

“We’d monitored him for some time prior to him signing here, and he’d also played against us in a couple of pre-season games. What he displayed straight away is that he has great awareness inside the penalty box, the kind that only goalscorers have.

“When you have that knack, plus the physical attributes and work-rate that Aaron has, then I think you will always score goals.

“He is a real handful and reminds me of Troy Deeney. He’s that type of forward. He’s got the physique, he’s all-action, he can finish and he’s a bit of a poacher.

“Aaron is also a good lad. Vil Powell [Weaver’s former assistant manager at Town] speaks very highly of him and that is important as well.

“Personally, I think he’s got all the attributes.”

Martin’s track record also suggests that he will add goals to the Town side.

A prolific 2018/19 at Brighouse Town saw him score 30 times and earn himself a move to National League North with Guiseley last summer.

At one point this season he was the leading marksman in the top six tiers of English football, having bagged 14 goals in 12 matches.

And, although injuries and a couple of suspensions disrupted his time at Nethemoor somewhat, Martin still finished up with a total of 17 strikes from his 23 Lions appearances.

“How quickly he settled at Guiseley bodes well for us,” Weaver added.

“Whenever we are able to get going again, he’s someone who should be capable of hitting the ground running.

“We tend to play a 4-4-2 system here, which means that if Aaron is in the team then he’d be playing up top alongside someone else. I believe that this will suit his game and help to bring out the best in him.”
