What Harrogate Town boss Simon Weaver said to 'unlucky' Alex Bradley after late own goal against Bromley

Harrogate Town missed out on the chance to close the gap between themselves and National League leaders Barrow to just two points on Saturday evening.

A goal from Jack Diamond shortly after half-time meant that Simon Weaver's team led visiting Bromley 1-0 until the 87th minute when they conceded a "gauling" equaliser.

The Ravens' leveller arrived as Alex Bradley attempted to clear Luke Coulson's left-wing corner at the far post, only to slice the ball into his own net.

And, while frustrated to have seen his side drop two points in a game that he felt they deserved to win, boss Weaver insisted he isn't blaming the Lincoln City loanee for what happened.

"I think their goal was avoidable, but we probably left ourselves open to something like that happening," Weaver said.

"We gave away too many free-kicks and set-pieces, and when balls are coming into your box you can be vulnerable.

"It was unfortunate for Alex, who was filling in where Lloyd [Kerry] had been at the far post. Our goalkeeper was blocked off and couldn't come for the ball and Alex hasn't made good contact with his attempted clearance.

"He was just unlucky and I've told him that. I don't want his head to go down. He was frustrated, in fact, he was upset, but that kind of thing can happen to anyone. He hasn't meant to do it.

"It is gauling to concede a goal like that because otherwise we'd have had three points, and I think we deserved them - and a clean-sheet.

"But, we just have to get on with it now. It's happened and there's nothing we can do about it."

Town's draw with Bromley leaves them on 66 points, four behind Barrow, who remain on 70 after losing 2-0 at home to Notts County at the weekend.

And, although Harrogate's failure to hang on to their lead means that they passed up the opportunity to take control of their own destiny as far as the title race is concerned, Weaver insists that his team should not be too disappointed.

"After the run we've been on, and the position we are now in, we can't be too downbeat," he added.

"The lads were a bit flat in the changing room at full-time, but we had a chat and I told them that while they could maybe have controlled things a bit better at 1-0, they didn't really do too much wrong.

"I see it as a point gained. We're closer to Barrow than we were at the start of play, so for me, that's a positive.

"The gap is only four points and we still have them to play here. Three weeks ago, their lead could have gone to 10 points, and that would have been difficult to make up.

"We've won 11 of the last 14, which is brilliant. I couldn't really have asked for any more from this group of players."
